The values of Freemasonry are based on integrity, kindness, honesty and
fairness. Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the
community as a whole – both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.
From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and
the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities.
Prytaneion Lodge endeavours to contribute equally to Masonic and non-Masonic charities alike.
During the Hampshire & Isle of Wight 2016 Charity Festival, we gained a Bronze Certificate for our
donations which, for a relatively small lodge, is noteworthy.
Masonic charity is exercised at every level: individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities
and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes. Nationally, our efforts are channeled
through the main charity organisation:
The Foundation will take over the work of the four central Masonic Charities, providing a wide
range of grants to Freemasons and their families who have a financial, health and care or family need.
The Foundation will also award grants to other charities, medical research studies and disaster
Funded entirely through the generous donations of the Masonic community, the Foundation will have an annual
charitable expenditure which places it amongst the largest charities in the country.
The Foundation will be financially strong, well-resourced and able to respond more effectively to the changing
needs of Masonic families and other charitable organisations.
